Summer at last

The rain and heat combination have shot everything into growth mode. The broccoli put on heads in a matter of 4 days last week.

The weeds are also threatening to out pace us as well though, so if anyone needs to get out some frustrations by doing some weeding or grass mowing, let me know!

In your shares this week:
Peas
Raspberries/Currents/blueberries
Kale
A salad mix
Red Onions
Garlic
Broccoli
Radishes
New potatoes

By next week it looks like we may see the first of the tomatoes and zucchini.

The struggles

This blog has not had many updates of late as it has seemed a constant battle to get and keep things growing on the farm this spring.

First, there was the re-roofing of the building next door to the Pender garden. Stray shingles littered the garden crushing new plants that were beginning to emerge and creating a significant clean up job. Then, there are the ongoing renovations happening next door resulting in various challenges including sheets of plywood being stacked on top of new arugula, a workman standing in the carrot and broccoli beds and the devastation of the apple tree.

We have also had the fences cut open 3 times and crows liked the grubs in the ground where we planted out all our watermelon and corn so much that the uprooted and killed all those seedlings!

But, with these rains coming as the days are at their longest things are beginning to catch up. Here is a picture of this week’s harvest.

Spring!!!!

We have all noticed the arrival of the sun! Thought I would throw up a few pictures of the action in the garden these days. We are setting plans and trying to figure out how to handle shares for this year, so if you have feedback from last year, please let me know.

Slowing down

Today’s shares will include:
Potatoes
Broccoli
Carrots
Kale
Beans
Peppers
Tomatoes
Basil

As the season begins to wind up. Now we transition to some overwintering action for garlic and prepare beds for a cover crop of winter wheat to feed and protect the soil in the coming months.

We will probably have a couple more harvests yet but the action has certainly slowed with the arrival of rain and shortened days.

See you on the farm!
